Maria is a full time visual artist living and working in Arnprior, Ontario. Her main artistic medium is ceramics and she mostly creates sculptural works but has small edition of functional ware series as well. She is also teaching ceramics at the Ottawa School of Art.
Maria holds a BFA in ceramics from the University of Visual Arts and Design, Cluj Napoca, Romania. She moved to Canada with her family in 2015.
For Maria, ceramic art is the perfect medium to explore colors and sculptural forms at the same time.
She mostly works with hand building techniques. Finishing the ceramic surface in a rich manner with different textures, engravings, vibrant colors and expressive drawings it's a very important part of her creative process.
Maria's artwork is immersed with a dreamlike combination of real and imaginary elements. She often brings together body parts, landscape, animal figures, architectural details which in real life would never show up together. Finding the connection points and links between these dimensions is provoking and invites the viewer to contemplate and to create a story of her/his own.
